May 3, 2026 3 min read 14 views

Skyline Retreat sits in Pike County near Waverly, Ohio. From the four biggest Ohio metros: 1 hour 14 minutes from Columbus, 1 hour 37 minutes from Dayton, 1 hour 47 minutes from Cincinnati, and 3 hours 31 minutes from Cleveland. Most guests drive in Friday after work and are at a fire by dark.

Below are the actual drive times, the routes most guests take, and what to throw in the truck before you leave.

Drive times at a glance

FromDrive timeDirection
Columbus, OH1 hr 14 minSouth
Dayton, OH1 hr 37 minSoutheast
Cincinnati, OH1 hr 47 minEast
Cleveland, OH3 hr 31 minSouth

Times above are typical, not Friday-rush times. Add 20 to 30 minutes if you leave a major metro between 4 and 6 p.m. on a Friday.

From Columbus (1 hr 14 min)

The shortest drive of the four. South on US 23 the whole way. Past Circleville. Past Chillicothe. You will see the hills lift up around you about 20 minutes before you arrive. Stop in Waverly for groceries or fuel if you forgot anything.

If you live in Columbus and you have never spent a night without ambient city light, the dark sky out here will feel unreal.

From Dayton (1 hr 37 min)

Cut southeast through Wilmington and Hillsboro. The drive turns rural fast. By the time you hit Bainbridge you are in the foothills. Pull over once for the view if the light is right.

From Cincinnati (1 hr 47 min)

The longest of the southwest-Ohio drives, but it stays scenic the whole way. Up through Bethel, then east. You can detour past Serpent Mound on the way in if you have a daylight hour to spare. It is 35 miles from Skyline Retreat and worth the stop, especially on a first visit.

From Cleveland (3 hr 31 min)

This is a real drive. Most Cleveland guests go down on Friday and back on Sunday afternoon. The route is mostly I-71 south to Columbus, then US 23 south. Coffee in Columbus. Quiet in Pike County by dinner.

If you have the time, stack a stop at Hocking Hills State Park on the way down. It is roughly 48 miles northeast of Skyline Retreat and breaks up the trip nicely.

What to bring for the drive in

  • Water for your stay. We are primitive. Bring at least one gallon per person per day.
  • A cooler with anything you want for the first 24 hours.
  • Headlamp, lighter, firewood-ready kindling.
  • Cash or backup card. The closest grocery is in Waverly, about 5 minutes away, but it is not a 24-hour store.
  • Your own tent and sleeping setup. We supply the land, the fire ring, and the picnic table.

Why drive time matters more than miles

Pike County is hilly. The last 15 minutes of any of these drives is two-lane road through forest. Plan accordingly: you cannot make up time on the back end the way you can on a flat interstate. Aim to arrive in daylight on your first visit so you can find the gravel drive without hunting.

Once you are here, the hills do their job. The drive home on Sunday tends to feel longer than the drive in on Friday, because you are slower.

Stack the trip

If you are driving more than 2 hours, it is worth stacking another nearby stop. The Lake White State Park post covers the closest one. Many guests do one named landmark and one quiet morning in the same weekend.
