Don't get me wrong. I love Hocking Hills. I grew up going there. But in 2026, the place is packed. Travel and Tour World ran a piece this year about how viral the region has gone. The hashtag is everywhere. So are the tour buses.
If you came to the woods to get away from people, Old Man's Cave on a Saturday is not going to do it for you.
The parks locals still keep quiet
Tar Hollow. Lake Hope. Shawnee State Park. Burr Oak. These are the places that used to be on the shortlist before social media found Hocking. They've still got waterfalls, ridges, and trails that aren't elbow-to-elbow.
Ever After in the Woods called them "national-park-feel without the crowds" in their 2026 guide. They're not wrong.
Why Skyline fits the same slot
Skyline sits in Appalachian Ohio, close enough to Hocking that you can day-trip over and come back to quiet. You get the hills, the forest, the stars. You don't get the parking lot.
A day-use pass gets you on the land for the afternoon. A primitive site gets you the whole weekend.
How to visit Hocking without the crowds
Go at sunrise. Skip Old Man's Cave on a Saturday. Pick Whispering Cave or Cedar Falls instead. Weekdays are your friend. So is October. So is February.
Come stay at Skyline. Hike Hocking on a Tuesday morning. Best of both.
See you at skyline.
